Packhorse Court Keswick

Situated just off the Market Square in Keswick, Packhorse Court has a unique collection of independently run shops and businesses. Please use the menu on the top to find out more about Packhorse Court itself or the menu on the left for further information on the individual businesses and shops. Built on the site of one of Keswick's burgage yards. A burgage plot was a strip of land held by the tenant upon payment of an annual rent. Fronting a plot would be a timber framed house, none are discemible in Keswick today. Packhorse Yard was where the coachmen and hauliers of the day stabled their animals, took their ale and food and slept. No doubt it attracted other characters less savoury. It was a dirty, noisy and often boisterous place with blacksmiths and slaughterers also plying their trade. The town 'shambles' (butchers yards) were on the site and also a byre for cattle that belonged to the Central Hotel - now part of Ye Olde Friars sweet shop.

Rathbones of Keswick

Rathbones first started in retail in Keswick in 1964. We are an award winning family business that prides itself on high quality customer service and advice, provided by highly trained staff. Our family history can be traced back to merchants from the Liverpool area, renowned for their honesty and decency. Rathbones have two retail shops in the centre of Keswick; they are both quite different in their product mix and it is well worth visiting both our stores when in the Lake District. We are very proud to announce that were voted the Independent Retailer of the Year (2012) by TGO (The Great Outdoors) magazine; an accolade well deserved by our committed and hard working staff.
